Loves wilderness

63, Semi retired

Hi I love animals, walking, nature and the countryside. I've had my own dogs in the past but not for a while now as I've wanted the freedom to travel and have adventures wherever and whenever I want. After losing my daughter 2 years ago I chose to do pet sitting to get me through some very difficult times. Having animals to care for and cuddle up to is very therapeutic. No need for words, just love and affection. Therefore I would love to have more contact with animals and to be able to travel around and enjoy different locations. Before moving to Scotland 8 years ago I lived and worked in Bristol. My background is in Social Work and Social Care work. One of my favourite jobs was supporting a learning disabled adult to volunteer at an animal sanctuary and a city farm. Unfortunately I had a bad experience 4 years ago when I cared for 2 golden retrievers and a cat for 3 months in exchange for cheaper rent. The dogs were very badly behaved when out and about for walks and wanted to go after anything and everything, barking and pulling terribly on the lead. This resulted in me sustaining a repetitive strain injury to my shoulder and irreparable damage to some fingers. There were many other issues and the owner never prewarned me about any of it. Sadly it means I have to be careful about the type of dogs/ animals I'm able to walk. Anything that pulls on the lead I wouldn't be able to manage I'm afraid. However I'm a seasoned hill walker and love walks in the countryside (and mountains of course) so going for long walks, if needed, is not a problem. I'm a very responsible and respectful person and careful of people's homes and possessions. I like a clean and tidy but homely environment and I will definitely shower love and affection on your beloved pets and will take great care of them; I look forward to having these new adventures :-)
NB. I'm often looking for pet sits in Bristol to see family, friends and volunteer at Rockaway Park Community Garden. Other places I particularly like to visit are anywhere where there are mountains being a hillwalker. I may be willing to do other sits (time permitting) outside of my preferred areas if travel or petrol costs can be covered. As the pet sitting is free I would ask, if people can afford it, would they please make a donation to Rockaway Park Community Garden project giving my name as a reference. Happy to share more information about this if interested. Thank you

Melanie is a lovely lady and obviously cares for animals. I felt safe in leaving my dogs in her care.

DAWN (Bangor Wales, Mar 2024 - 2 weeks 6 nights)
Having a Housesitter you do not know in your home means both sides need to trust the other. We entrusted our much loved cat to Melanie and were delighted at the rapport they had. Melanie was conscientious in her care, so much so that Missey allowed Melanie to stroke her!! This is quite unusual as Missey is an elderly independent moggie. We kept in touch while we were away, and when we returned back our house was ready to welcome us...as were Missey and Melanie. Melanie had taken care of our ... MORE

JEAN (Dudley , Feb 2024 - 1 week)
Melanie was just the perfect sitter for our foxy gentleman Cody.. a 16 year old mixed breed. We were always in touch and Melanie kept us updated on his wellbeing. They bonded straight away and we felt confident he was very well looked after. And he is quite a lot of work . I feel we have a new member of our family.. Thank you Melanie , you are marvellous. šŸ˜Š

KERRY (Bristol England, Dec 2023 - 1 week 1 night)
Melanie was really lovely, we chatted for ages when she arrived and the cats really warmed to her. She looked after them and the house really well and they even slept with her! She messaged every day and sent lovely photos of my cats. The house was also lovely and clean for when I got back. Iā€™d definitely recommend Melanie and Iā€™d love to see her again and have her to look after my cats.

EMMA (Worcester England, Dec 2023 - 4 nights)
Melanie was the perfect sitter ā€” and (crucially!) my dog Molly took to her the minute she walked through the door! We had a video call ahead of the sit, and Melanie's communication with me was excellent both before and during her stay. She took excellent care of Molly, she happily worked around my logistics, and she left the house immaculate for me to come home to. Highly recommended, and Molly and I would be delighted to welcome Melanie back in the future.

EUGENIE (Longforgan Scotland, May 2023 - 4 days)
Melanie was a wonderful house & pet sitter! Communication was easy and natural with Melanie from the start, we spoke over the phone to discuss with details and was nice to get to know her. She was very adaptable as on our handover day I had a very tight schedule due to work and flights and she very kindly was able to work around this which was a huge help. Our house was in fab condition on our return and most importantly for us our cat Peanut was a very happy boy and had bonded with ... MORE

KIMBERLEY (Frome England, Apr 2023 - 4 days)
Melanie looked after our springer spaniel, Monty, whilst we were away for six days. It was clear that Monty had a fantastic time and was totally content with Melanie. Even when we got back, he sat with his head on Melanie's lap as we had a cup of tea - if that isn't a sign of a happy dog, I don't know what is! Communication was great whilst we were away and we had absolutely no concerns whatsoever. Melanie was brilliant getting to know Monty, taking him for long walks during the day and ... MORE

BELINDA (Bristol England, Feb 2023 - 6 days)
Mel was absolutely brilliant as a house and dog sitter. This was the first time we had left Monte at home while we went away, so were naturally a bit nervous about how it would go. But Mel took such good care of him and the place, with fab communication, that we were able to truly relax in the knowledge that everything was OK. I would thoroughly recommend her to anyone else and wish her lots of luck. She's welcome back any time!
